I’m pleased to announce that WESTAC's 2021 Compass Report on the findings from our annual survey of Western Canada’s transportation leaders is now available. Building on previous surveys, we asked leaders to share their views on key business, economic, supply chain and technological challenges and opportunities for the Western transportation system. In this edition, we also address the impact of COVID-19 on the industry.

The majority of executives continue to be pessimistic about Canada’s investment climate, and 70% think it is getting worse, especially without renewed investment in trade infrastructure to support Canada’s post-pandemic recovery.

Key findings:

  • In addition to COVID-19-related challenges, there is significant uncertainty regarding the depth and length of the global economic downturn.
  • Investment in infrastructure will be critical to kick-start the post-pandemic recovery and drive trade and employment.
  • Although respondents believe that Western Canada’s supply chains have demonstrated resiliency during the pandemic, there is consensus that continued operational improvements are needed for companies to succeed in an increasingly competitive business climate.

WESTAC will continue to play a convening role to improve understanding of the events and issues that affect the transportation sector, gather and share industry research and findings, raise awareness of critical industry issues, act as a catalyst to stimulate discussion and search for solutions, and engage the sector to move the industry forward.

I encourage you to use the survey results in your reports, presentations and advocacy. We would be pleased to provide additional resources, including infographics, presentation slides and print or digital copies of the report if that would be helpful.

We look forward to hearing from you and encourage you to provide me with your feedback by phone or email.
