This is the third year we have produced a document of this nature, highlighting the opinions of senior executives within the transportation sector. The survey has become a well-read barometer of the state of our sector industries. The effect has been to raise the profile and awareness of major issues, thereby helping to promote and shape a dialogue respecting transportation supply chain issues, infrastructure priorities and government policies among members at WESTAC’s forums and roundtables.

The online survey was conducted in late 2019, prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Respondents forecasted an economic downturn, but at the time, the depth and rate of decline from the pandemic obviously could not have been foreseen. The World Trade Organization now estimates it will not be until 2021 that trade can be expected to recover. Economic recovery in Canada will be dependent upon whatever foundation is laid now in anticipation of the turnaround.

As the survey suggests, that foundation must include significant public investment in trade infrastructure in addition to measures of fiscal and monetary policy.

We look forward to hearing from you and encourage you to provide myself (oexell@westac.com) or Lisa (lbaratta@westac.com) with your feedback by phone or email.
